It's a protected natural area with an extension of 11,987 hectares that includes both maritime and terrestrial portions. It protects the most visited reefs in Cozumel, which are part of the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef System, the second largest in the world.
Most of the park comprises the island's coral reefs, but there is also an area that includes the southern part of the island, past the international piers.
Continuous monitoring is carried out to support the conservation of reef formations, as well as educational programs to raise awareness among operators and the population to conserve the environment.
It has a rich biodiversity, including hawksbill, loggerhead, and green sea turtles, starfish, sea urchins, sponges, crustaceans, mollusks, and a myriad of colorful tropical fish.
This is one of the best places in the world for diving, but we recommend being very careful not to damage this important yet fragile ecosystem.
