It is part of the Great Maya Reef or Mesoamerican Barrier Reef System, considered the second largest barrier reef in the world, and it is located just 500 meters off the coast.
Since 1998, it has been designated a Protected Natural Area with the status of a National Park. It is located on the northeastern coast of the state of Quintana Roo, on the Caribbean coast of the Municipality of Benito Juarez, in front of the town of Puerto Morelos, and it has a total area of 9,066.63 hectares, of which a small portion is land.
This section of the reef features diverse marine life with colorful fish and stunning coral reefs. It hosts an amazing biodiversity, with almost 700 species of marine fauna, both invertebrates and vertebrates, and more than 250 species of algae. Among the most representative species are corals, sponges, snails, lobsters, seahorses, crabs, shrimp, octopuses, jellyfish, squids, rays, green turtles, loggerhead turtles, hawksbill turtles, and nurse sharks, as well as a variety of reef fish such as angelfish, parrotfish, lionfish, grouper, clownfish, damselfish, and surgeonfish.
It also encompasses an extensive coastal area that consists mainly of wetlands.
This is a place that is a true paradise for those who enjoy exploring the underwater world, whether by snorkeling or diving, as well as for practicing water sports such as kayaking and windsurfing.
In an effort to protect this ecosystem, boat traffic and size are restricted, and all snorkeling and diving tours must be accompanied by guides who explain the care that must be taken with the coral reefs so that you can continue to enjoy this underwater paradise.
