It is a flat and extensive sandy depression 60 km long that has salt over a large area (hence the name) and does not have much vegetation. The terrain changes from sandy to completely hard ground. It is the lowest extension in the entire country with 12 m below the sea level.

There are some areas with clay so small that it evokes a lunar landscape. It should be noted that to visit it, it is necessary to hire a guide, since it has a fairly extreme climate.

It is such a unique landscape that it has been used for the filming of movies such as Resident Evil: extinction and events such as a Luciano Pavarotti concert in 2003.
