A beautiful body of brackish water that extends for almost 10 kilometers. It is a not very deep body of water surrounded by mangrove vegetation and a habitat for a great diversity of birds, as well as a sanctuary for manatees.
Near the lagoon, there is the "Centro de Atención y Rehabilitación de Mamíferos Acuáticos del Área Natural Protegida Estatal, el Santuario del Manatí-Bahía de Chetumal" (Center for Attention and Rehabilitation of Aquatic Mammals of the State Protected Natural Area, the Manatee Sanctuary-Bay of Chetumal), which is a protected natural area of 281,000 hectares that includes the Hondo River, the Bay of Chetumal, and Laguna Guerrero.
The center's main objective is to protect manatees, but also other threatened species such as the American crocodile, the river turtle, and the jaguar.
There are several informal restaurants where you can enjoy delicious dishes made with fish and seafood.
