It was decreed as a protected area and has an extension of 705 thousand hectares. It is part of the most important delta in Mexico and is one of the largest estuary lagoon systems in the country.
Laguna de Términos region presents a mosaic of ecosystems such as coastal dunes, mangroves, swamp vegetation, high-medium jungle, and secondary vegetation that are the habitat of hundreds of birds, as well as ocelots, deer, manatees, alligators, and crocodiles, to name a few. There are also several aquaculture farms.
It is classified as a natural sanctuary for the reproduction of the bottlenose dolphin, the hawksbill turtle and the manatee.
The area known as Estero Parque is surrounded by a large number of mangroves and it worth a visit.
