Stretching nearly 60 kilometers from end to end (from Uchben Kah in the north to Xul-Há in the south), Bacalar is the second longest inland lagoon in the country, after Lake Chapala, which is about 80 kilometers long.
This lagoon is the gateway to a vast lake and river system in southern Quintana Roo. To the north, Bacalar is connected to other lagoons such as Guerrero and Chile Verde, whose waters mingle with those of the Caribbean Sea. To the south, it is connected to the Hondo River through the Chac Canal.
The commercial routes of the past took advantage of this complex water network, and today's visitors enjoy the beauty of the lagoon with its different shades.
During the colonial era, English pirates ventured from Belize in search of valuable logwood (also known as Campeche wood) through a channel that emptied almost in front of present-day Bacalar. The constant visits of these pirates were the reason for the construction of the Fort of San Felipe.
Later, until the mid-20th century, logging camps in the northern end of the lagoon would throw cut tree trunks into the waters of the lagoon and tow them south to be taken out through Chetumal.
Known as the "lagoon of seven colors," this lagoon is considered one of the most beautiful in Mexico. It is a vast expanse of shallow waters with white, soft sand that owes its different colors to the various minerals that make up the sediments of its floor, such as calcium and sulfur compounds.
Bacalar Lagoon is an excellent place for water sports, especially on the southern side where there are several maze-like channels that connect to the Hondo River through the Chac Estuary.
There are small docks from which you can swim or rent boats, jet skis, or kayaks to explore its beautiful landscapes surrounded by lush, bright green trees that contrast with its various shades of blue.
Within the lagoon, there are areas with pools filled with calcareous formations ranging from gentle slopes to small canyons and true walls. This constitutes a unique spectacle for diving enthusiasts. These dives are very safe and excellent for beginners.
