The lake has a coastline of 55 km and contains seven islands: Janitzio, La Pacanda, Yunuén, Tecuena, a small islet called "La Tecuenita", located near Tecuena Island, Jarácuaro, Urandén Morelos and Urandén Morales, which have maintained its island status, thanks to a dredging program.
The lake is surrounded by 26 towns, each with its own beauty and personality. In addition, it is home to fish such as: the famous white fish, black bass, acumara and other smaller fish, called tiruhs and cheguas.
