Ex Convento de San Francisco

It is a Franciscan work built from 1596 to 1660, under the direction of Friar Francisco de Torantos.

In 1732, the Apostolic College of Propaganda Fide was founded within the convent, a function it retained until 1861 when, due to the Reform Laws, the religious had to abandon the convent. Later, it was used as a school, barracks, jail, and civil hospital.

Starting in 1984, the Photography Museum was established in the annexes of the convent. In 2010, the convent was rehabilitated and remodeled. The lower cloister houses offices of the INAH in Hidalgo and the San Francisco Site Museum, along with the Toltecas Exhibition Hall and the Antonio Peñafiel Library, specialized in anthropology and history.

Its white facade with some Baroque-style finishes stands out. Its main chapel is the Nuestra Señora de la Luz, an 18th-century construction with a clear Churrigueresque style and sculptures of saints from the Franciscan order.

Inside, in the choir area, you can admire an oil painting representing the Assumption, which is perfectly preserved.

The chapel has a white and gold altarpiece attached to it in a Churrigueresque style, unique in Pachuca. At the top, there is a niche with the image of San Francisco.

The sacristy houses a set of hand-washing basins made of carved stone, and several 18th-century paintings can be admired.
