The stromatolites of Bacalar are one of the oldest life forms on the planet and a nearly unique natural treasure. These living rocks exist in only a few places in the world, such as the west coast of Australia, Andros Island in the Bahamas, the Red Sea, Lagoa Salgada in Brazil, the salt flats of the Northern Zone of Chile, Cuatrociénegas in Coahuila, and Bacalar Lagoon, precisely in this area.
Essentially, they are clusters of cell colonies that form rocks. Technically, they are a bioconstruction that is estimated to be between 25,000 and 10,000 million years old.
According to scientists, these living stones were crucial in the development of life on our planet. Millions of years ago, stromatolite reefs covered parts of the sea, producing oxygen on a massive scale, which caused a drastic change in the Earth's atmosphere.
With over 350 million years of age, they are considered the earliest signs of life on Earth.
Stromatolites or stone beds are composed of millions of bacteria that have formed over thousands of years, which is why their conservation and care are very important.
These ancient beings are extraordinarily fragile, so you should not touch them or walk on them.
