Catedral Basílica de Aguascalientes (Cathedral)
The current temple was built from 1704 to 1738.
Inside, you can find the image of the Virgin of the Assumption, the patron saint of the State, which was brought from Spain in 1919 to replace the previous one.
The construction consists of an atrial wall composed of quarry pillars and wrought iron gates with side entrances. The main entrance of the temple has three levels and is beautifully carved in pink quarry stone in a Baroque style.
This facade contrasts with the twin towers in a clear neoclassical style.
Inside, there are three domes and a decoration with vegetal motifs and plaster reliefs. The beautiful white marble cypress, which houses the image of the Virgin of the Assumption, the elaborately decorated Sacristy Chapel in gold, a wooden pipe organ brought from Congo, and the works of José de Alcíbar and Miguel Cabrera stand out.
Adjacent to the cathedral is the Bishop's Palace, which houses a valuable art gallery with paintings, and admission is free.
