Its construction began around 1760 and extended throughout the remaining period of the Viceroyalty. 

In this building, Miguel Hidalgo issued the decree abolishing slavery, and President Benito Juárez was almost assassinated on March 13, 1858. 

As the building was intended to house the generals who governed Nueva Galicia, it has a façade facing the main square with a pronounced military character. 

Inside the Government Palace, there are remarkable paintings by José Clemente Orozco, including the most realistic depiction of Hidalgo ever created, portrayed on a grand scale.
