The island belongs to the town of Bahia de Kino, located 117 km west of Hermosillo, and since pre-Hispanic times, the island has been an important place for the Seri people.

On December 24, 1539, Captain Francisco de Ulloa discovered it without realizing it was an island. During the 17th century, it was considered a peninsula, and today, this tourist destination is an ecological reserve for the protection of the local flora and fauna.

The impressive island measures approximately 50 kilometers in length and 25 kilometers in width, with a surface area of 1,208 square kilometers, making it the largest in the country. It is separated from the mainland by the Infiernillo Channel, which has a maximum depth of 13 meters. As a result, only small boats can cross it.

The terrestrial vegetation consists of coastal dune types, thorny scrub, and small-leaved thornless shrubs, which serve as habitats for bighorn sheep and desert bighorn sheep.

There are some tours that combine the beautiful natural landscapes with holistic activities, as well as stories and activities that reflect the traditions of the Seri people.
