Templo y Hospital de San Felipe de Jesús
Founded in 1524, it was the first hospital in America.
Hernán Cortés ordered its construction to provide aid to the wounded soldiers in the conquest wars and to give thanks to God for his victory over the Aztecs.
Originally known as the Hospital of the Immaculate Conception, it took on the name of Jesus when the Church of Jesus of Nazarene was built next to it.
The remains of the conqueror are located here. Outside, there is a stone plaque marking the spot where Moctezuma II and Hernán Cortés met.
The construction of this Renaissance-style building began in 1587 and was completed in 1622. It was built on the same site as the Aránzazu chapel, which was located in the atrium of the San Francisco convent.
The current church was inaugurated in 1897 and was rebuilt by the priest Antonio Plancarte y Labastida. The pedestal above the main altar, supporting the Saint, was made with stones from temples that were destroyed during the Reform War. en 1897 y fue reconstruida por el sacerdote Antonio Plancarte y Labastida. Inside, the main altar features a marvelous sculpture of the Virgin of the Apocalypse, and in the choir, there is a mural by Clemente Orozco with the same name, created between 1942 and 1944.
Inside the hospital building, there are murals by Antonio González Orozco depicting the encounter between Moctezuma II and Hernán Cortés, as well as the history of medicine.
