Templo de San Roque
The small San Roque church is located in front of an attractive square.
It was built around 1726 on the site where the Cofradía de la Misericordia chapel had been built in 1651.
The church has a single tower, and its pink quarry façade is in a baroque style with three levels, a wooden door, and a coral window.
Inside, on the right side, there is a life-sized Christ, and on the opposite side, there is a large oil painting of San Padre, San Miguel Arcangel, and San Roque. Next to it is the altar to the Virgin of Guadalupe.
The main altar is a white and gold-painted wooden altar, with the Virgin of the Rosary in the center, flanked on one side by the figure of San Roque and on the other by the figure of Santo Domingo.
In the aisles, there is a collection of oil paintings with gold leaf frames depicting scenes from the Stations of the Cross of Christ.
The San Roque square is well-known because since 1953 it has served as the setting for the Cervantinos Interludes, which gave rise to the International Cervantino Festival in 1972. In the center of the square, there is a stone cross surrounded by six forged iron lampposts, reminiscent of the Cross of Córdoba, Spain.
