The first construction has been attributed to the first bishop of Michoacán, Vasco de Quiroga, between 1570 and 1590.
Its initial name was the Temple of the Hospital of Our Lady of Mercy for the Tarascan Indians.
This temple underwent several reconstructions in different years: 1713, 1733, 1968, and 1978.
La fachada está realizada en cantera y es de estilo barroco del siglo XVIII y la planta arquitectónica es de cruz latina con una bóveda de cañón corrido.
Inside, the main altar contains a sculpture made with cornstalk paste. It is one of the oldest figures in the city.
