Discover 350 years of Puebla's history.
In 1999, during a hydraulic project, the Bubas Bridge was discovered, which was practically intact, along with a network of tunnels that spans almost 10 kilometers. In 2014, efforts began to rescue and transform them into another attraction of the city.
The Bubas Bridge is located beneath Boulevard Cinco de Mayo and was used to cross the San Francisco River. It now resembles a tunnel and is named after the bridge that led to the hospital that treated patients with the bubonic plague from 1682 to 1703. Later, it was converted into the Royal Hospital of San Pedro, and subsequently used as an inn and barracks for the King's Dragon Company. One of the most attractive elements found in this emblematic bridge is the old carved stone shield of the city of Puebla, dating back to 1790.
As for the network of tunnels, nine tunnels have been identified, constructed with polished stones. Due to the different architectural styles present, it is believed that they were built in different periods. One recurring feature in the tunnels is the semicircular arches.
The most important tunnel is known as the Puerta de Zaragoza, located in the Xanenetla neighborhood. It extends for approximately four kilometers and has a height of over 8 meters. This tunnel is fully illuminated, and as you walk through it, you discover parts of Puebla's history. It connects the San Francisco River with the Guadalupe Fort, playing a strategic role during the French invasion in 1862.
You can enjoy these tours starting at the room known as "The Secrets of Puebla," then proceed to a room where you can admire the mural "Las dos Pueblas" by Fuentes de María. On the second floor, you can visit the Water Museum, which highlights the importance of this resource for the city. The tour ends in a room exhibiting artworks and antique maps.
