Santa Gertrudis la Magna

Located in the middle of the desert in the heart of the Baja California peninsula.

It was an important Cochimi indigenous settlement, which led the Jesuit missionaries, led by Fernando Consag, to select this site for its foundation in 1751.

The mission was abandoned in 1822 due to the decrease in its indigenous population.

The stone construction that currently exists was built during the administration of the Dominicans around 1786; only the foundations remain from its original construction during the time of the Jesuits, along with remnants of three cemeteries and sections of walls.

It is one of the two missions that are completely intact and still in use. The quarry construction comprising the church and mission quarters remains, along with a bell tower, the still-functioning aqueduct, and stone bands.

Location

It is located near the border of Baja California and Baja California Sur. To get there, take the road 25 km south of Guerrero Negro on Federal Highway No. 1. From there, take the dirt road to El Arco and travel 36 km northwest until you reach the mission.
