San Fernando de Velicatá

The expedition led by Fray Junípero Serra, accompanied by Fray Miguel de la Campa y Cos and Governor Gaspar de Portalá, discovered a site they considered suitable for establishing a mission due to its fertile valley, just north of the Santa María de Los Ángeles Mission.

On February 14, 1769, missionary Serra, the president of the Franciscans in the Californias, founded the San Fernando Velicatá mission.

There are significant remains of adobe walls, an irrigation ditch, and a cistern from the Franciscan mission.

Near the San Fernando Creek, one can also visit the nearby cave paintings, which were likely made after the arrival of the Spanish.

Further ahead are the Las Pintas paintings, which consist of a vast collection of enormous rocks between two hills, featuring hundreds of white drawings.

Location

It is located 57 km south of El Rosario on Federal Highway No. 1 and 130 km south of San Quintín. Access is through Rancho El Progreso, and the mission is 8.5 km to the west.
