The building consists of a collection of traditional houses located in the historic center of the city of Colima.

The University Art Gallery has eleven rooms, seven of which house permanent exhibitions featuring works by renowned artists such as Maestro Torres Quintero, Espinosa Chacón, Gerardo Murillo (Dr. Atl), Rafael Coronel, Fernando Best Pontones, Antonio Rodriguez Luna, and local artists Jorge Chávez Carrillo, Javier Fernández, Carlos Escobar, Rafael Mesina, among others. The remaining rooms are used for temporary exhibitions.

In the middle of the courtyard, there is a beautiful polychrome stained glass window representing the erupting Volcano of Fire, designed by architect Gonzalo Villa Chávez.

The art gallery has a cafeteria, library, reading room, and souvenir shop.
