Parroquia y Ex Convento de San Juan Bautista
It's one of the oldest Catholic churches in the Valley of Mexico.Â
Construction began in the 16th century when Hernán Cortés donated some land to the Franciscan friars to build a convent, the church, and the garden that occupied what is now known as Coyoacán Park, where the arches of the convent's atrium entrance are still preserved.
Some elements of the church are also preserved, such as the basilica floor plan, its plateresque facade, and the vestibule or side corridor with three naves.Â
In the early 19th century, during a cholera epidemic in the area, the large atrium served as a cemetery; now only a small cemetery remains, which can be accessed from one side of the church.
In 1933, the interior of the Parish was restored, including the pillars, statues, and altars, which were covered with gold leaf. The corridors were decorated with paintings, as was the main vault, completing the remodeling in 1944.
The choir loft and the beautiful late 17th-century Baroque altarpiece in the Chapel of the Rosary are noteworthy.
