Palacio del Ex-arzobispado
This archbishopric is the oldest hierarchical nucleus in the country.
It was established as a bishopric on September 2, 1530, and by the end of the 16th century, its jurisdiction reached Manila, Philippines.
It was in this Archbishop's Palace where Friar Juan de Zumárraga, the first archbishop of Mexico, met with Juan Diego when, according to Catholic tradition, the image of the Virgin of Guadalupe appeared on his cloak.
Two centuries later, during the height of the Baroque period, the building was reconstructed at the initiative of Archbishop Juan Antonio Vizarrón y Eguiarreta, who governed the diocese until 1749 and is responsible for the current appearance of the building.
The interior has two courtyards that have undergone various modifications. In fact, it was severely damaged by the earthquakes of 1985, and during its restoration, an ancient platform from the Temple of Tezcatlipoca and several objects from the Mexica culture were found. After the restoration, it was designated to house part of the art collection of the Ministry of Finance.
Therefore, the building currently houses an important exhibition, cultural events, and editorial presentations.
