Museo de la Isla de Cozumel
The Museum of the Island of Cozumel is housed in a building constructed in 1930 that was previously one of the first hotels on the island.
Once revered by the Mayans as a religious destination, the modern history of Cozumel Island began as a pre-Hispanic navigation and trading center. With the arrival of Juan de Grijalva and Hernan Cortés in the 16th century, Cozumel Island was later used as a shelter by pirates and served as a refuge for those fleeing the Caste War. Anecdotes and scenes from these periods are on display.
The museum showcases the historical past and present of Cozumel through four exhibition halls: The Island, which presents in detail the profile of the island's origin and geological evolution; The Sea, where the underwater environment is showcased, explaining the formation of coral reefs; History and Archaeology, where various pre-Hispanic artifacts are exhibited, highlighting its importance as a sanctuary of Ixchel; and Contemporary Cozumel, which depicts the island's history during the 20th century.
There are also two temporary exhibition halls, a Maya Room, a Maya House, and a public library.
Subtle lighting brings the entire exhibition to life, and throughout the museum, you will find dioramas, sculptures, maps, and much more.
The museum offers bilingual guides, a bookstore, a snack bar, handicrafts, internet services, and restrooms.
