Museo de la Evangelización, Ex Convento de San Miguel Arcángel en Huejotzingo
This cultural heritage site was inscribed on the World Heritage List in 1994.
It is a convent founded by the Franciscans and built from 1544 to 1570. It has a style that can be described as a mix of Plateresque and Mudejar.
This complex was one of the first four Franciscan establishments in New Spain and consists of a huge courtyard with a stone cross in the center and four posa chapels at each of its corners, each dedicated to Peter and Paul, John the Baptist, James, and the Virgin of the Assumption.
This construction is characterized by two tall classical columns that have a thin cornice at the top forming an alfiz.
Inside, you can appreciate samples of mural painting, with the most notable being the mural of the hooded figures. The famous fresco painting depicts the figures of the first 12 Franciscans who arrived in New Spain in 1524, led by Fray Martín de Valencia.
Additionally, it has one of the few 16th-century altarpieces in the country that has been preserved in perfect condition.
The main theme of the museum is the evangelization of the central region of the country, including baptismal fonts, altarpieces, paintings, textiles, and objects used in religious ceremonies.
