Museo de Antropología e Historia de Xalapa

Opened in 1958, it was the first anthropology museum in Mexico.

After its expansion in 1986, it has established itself as one of the best in its kind.

Its construction features walls made of pink quarry stone and marble floors. In the lobby, visitors are welcomed by one of the Olmec colossal heads, and the exhibition consists of over two thousand pieces.

Its spacious halls are dedicated to the cultures that dominated the region: Totonaca, Huastec, and Olmec. The hall dedicated to the Olmecs displays the pieces found in the "Tres Zapotes" area, highlighting the Olmec heads, the anthropomorphic jaguar, and "El Luchador" (The Wrestler).

The hall of Huastec, Totonaca, Pinome, and Popoloca cultures showcases a series of sculptural and artisanal works from those tribes.

There is also a hall dedicated to cultural osteology, anthropology, and a hall dedicated to codices. The Codex Room displays some reproductions of documents from the 16th century.

The museum has several courtyards. The first one is dedicated to the cultures of the central region of Veracruz, featuring several sculptures from different origins. One notable piece is an "ocelote" (ocelot) found in the Misantla region. The second courtyard has stone sculptures from the classic and post-classic periods, including representations of a giant turtle, warriors, as well as some zoomorphic and anthropomorphic figures.

There are temporary exhibition halls, a reading room, a cafeteria, an auditorium for cultural events, and a shop selling artifacts and documents related to anthropology.
