Misión de San Francisco Javier Viggé Biaundó
A 31 kilometers from the mission of Loreto, amidst the imposing Sierra de la Giganta, lies this beautiful mission.
It was founded on March 10, 1699, by Francisco María Píccolo, although at that time there was only an adobe chapel and a rectory. In 1744, Father Miguel del Barco began the construction of the impressive structure, which included a stone church, a fountain, the sacristy, a cemetery, the missionary's house, and exterior gardens, and it took him fourteen years of hard work to complete it.
The mission became a key piece in the colonization process of the Californias.
It is considered 'the jewel of the missions of Baja California' for its beautiful and imposing architecture and for the perfect state of preservation in which it is found. Its facade is in the Baroque style, highlighting the beautiful ogee-arched door, the ornaments in the choir window, and the simple buttresses framing it.
Inside, it preserves a magnificent stipe-baroque altarpiece, carved and gilded wood, dedicated to San Francisco Javier, whose image is accompanied by five excellent oil paintings with religious images, as well as statues of San Francisco Javier and Our Lady of Guadalupe, and a crucifix, all from the 18th century.
Currently, many believers come paying vows and enter on their knees from La Cruz de Calvario, a monument located near the mission.
Adjacent to the mission is the picturesque town of San Javier.
