Instituto Allende
It is located in a huge stone building dating back to 1735.
The building was originally erected as a country residence for the wealthy Canal family, who began construction on the site in 1735. In 1809, it was sold to the Discalced Carmelite sisters.
It is currently a visual arts school that offers a wide range of courses, a Bachelor of Visual Arts degree, and a Master of Fine Arts. It has been popular among American and Canadian students and artists since its opening in 1950.
The art university occupies the rear part of the complex and its gardens. The front features a commercial plaza with a café and several galleries.
The Pérgola Gallery, inaugurated in 1951, has a large collection of works by Mexican artists in different styles and media.
