Iglesia El Calvario
It is believed that the temple belonged to the Dominican convent of the city.
This small 18th-century temple is located behind the presbytery of the Merced Church and is one of San Cristóbal's typical colonial corners.
A gate and corridor lead to the peaceful and tree-filled atrium. The architectural layout is in the form of a Latin cross with a single nave, a double-sloped roof with wooden beams as braces, and a simple wooden coffered ceiling.
The presbytery houses the altarpiece of the Crucified Christ on Calvary. Joseph and Mary, as well as the two thieves on their crosses, are depicted. This gilded and polychrome altarpiece is one of the finest examples of Mexican Renaissance art. These images are highly venerated by the indigenous people of the region. The facade has pleasant proportions, with two horizontal sections topped by a bell gable and a bell tower.
