Ex Convento de la Merced
This convent belonged to the Mercedarian order and it is said that its temple was the most sumptuous in New Spain.
Its construction dates back to 1595, and the Third Order Chapel was completed in 1634, later replaced by a new temple in 1654.
In the 19th century, with the Laws of Reform, the temple was demolished, and in the early 20th century, to prevent the demolition of the cloister, Dr. Atl, a renowned artist, lived in the place to save it from being demolished as well.
The cloister, dating from 1676, is the only part that remains and is considered one of the most beautiful examples of Mudéjar art in the American continent.Â
It consists of a courtyard surrounded by arches with smooth columns of Doric capital decorated with vegetal rosettes, as well as shells with images of saints.Â
The second floor is built in the Mudéjar style with beautifully carved columns.
At the southern end, there is a monumental staircase that culminates in beautiful doors with semi-circular arches.
