By 1569, there were six Franciscan monasteries in the Tlaxcala Province.

These were located in Tlaxcala, Tepeyanco, Atlihuetzía, Chiautempan, Ixtacuixtla, and Huamantla, which, due to the size of the province and the number of its inhabitants, were considered insufficient for proper evangelization and ecclesiastical instruction. Therefore, in the same year, licenses were authorized for three more monasteries, one of which was located in Atlangatepec.

This convent was built around 1574 by the Franciscans and has withstood the test of time, as both the convent and the temple still exist to this day. Although they have undergone various modifications, they have retained their distinctly Franciscan appearance of great sobriety and beautiful simplicity.

The facade is whitewashed, and a small atrium and wooden roofs covered with concrete slabs have been preserved.

Location

Av. 5 de Mayo, Atlangatepec, Tlax. (In front of the main square, 37 km north of the city of Tlaxcala, towards Apizaco).
