The San Bernardino de Siena Convent is a majestic construction in terms of its dimensions and austere in its Franciscan style.
It is the second largest convent on the Yucatan Peninsula.
Its architecture is reminiscent of medieval fortresses, as some of its walls exceed three meters in thickness.
The complex includes a church, chapel, former convent, atrium, and orchard.
At the entrance, you can still see the Franciscan coat of arms and the date when the construction was completed.
Inside, there is a remarkable baroque altarpiece carved in wood with arabesque motifs and painted in gold, as well as the image of the Sorrowful Virgin and Saint Teresa of Jesus.
In the orchard, there is a well built over the Sis-Há Cenote, from which pre-Hispanic and colonial artifacts have been extracted and are exhibited in the convent itself.
It is located in the Sisal Neighborhood, which can be reached via Calzada de los Frailes.
