The ruins of this former Convent are well preserved.

The standalone tower and a small dome of this former convent still stand, which holds great historical significance. It served as the starting point, on June 6, 1591, for the 400 Tlaxcalan families that helped colonize the northern region of the vast viceroyalty of New Spain, known as the Great Chichimeca, where Tlaxcalan settlers founded cities.

Due to its location on the banks of the Zahuapan and Totolac rivers, which would overflow during the rainy season, the convent fell into disuse due to constant flooding.

After its abandonment, the population used it as a cemetery, as over 20 colonial-era burials have been discovered.

The chapel with its magnificent dome and some walls that used to be the sacristy and kitchen are still preserved.

Location

San Juan Totolac, Tlaxcala (5 km from the city of Tlaxcala).
