Its original style was Baroque, although some renovations in 1895 introduced elements of Neo-Gothic style.
Since 1964, the remains of the fifth Bishop of Veracruz, Rafael Guizar y Valencia (1877-1937), have been housed inside the cathedral, in a special chapel. He was beatified on January 29, 1995, by Pope John Paul II.
It also houses a museum of relics dedicated to Blessed Guizar y Valencia.
