Previously, there was a modest parish church on this site.
The current construction began in the early 17th century and was completed in 1731.
The Cathedral was dedicated to the Virgin of the Assumption and became a cathedral in 1963.
It has a basilica plan with five naves, with the central nave being the largest. The octagonal dome is covered in Puebla mosaics.
The square-based tower was added in the early 20th century and features a small dome.
The facade is in a sober neoclassical style and has two levels with a pediment. The first level has a semicircular entrance flanked by two Doric-style columns. The second level houses the choir window in the center, above which there is a medallion.
The interior has a simple decoration, and notable features include the Baccarat crystal chandeliers, the main altar with Baroque ornamentation, and the figure of Saint Sebastian Martyr, the city's patron saint.
