Catedral de San Cristóbal

Its construction began in 1528, and it was initially known as the Cathedral of San Cristóbal Mártir.

The Cathedral was consecrated to the Virgin of the Assumption in 1538 by Pope Paul II, and Friar Bartolomé de las Casas, a Dominican defender of the indigenous people, was its first bishop.

The original church was modified and partially rebuilt in the 17th century, and its current façade dates back to the 18th century.

The main façade, facing west, has a distinct Baroque style, with three horizontal bodies and three vertical streets separated by double Tuscan columns on the first level, Ionic on the second level, topped with pinnacles. Its decoration features mortar-made vegetal motifs and several niches containing sculptures of Santo Domingo, San Francisco, San Pedro, and San Pablo, among others.

It has a rectangular floor plan, a central nave, and two side aisles with fluted Corinthian columns supporting the arches that originally held a wooden coffered ceiling with cedar beams and floral motifs.

The central nave culminates in magnificent baroque altarpieces made of wood covered with gold leaf and a painting by Juan Correa. The central altarpiece is dedicated to the Virgin of the Assumption and San Cristóbal Mártir, the patron saint of the city; the one on the right side is dedicated to Saint Joseph and bishops, and the one on the left side depicts the crucifixion and the Virgin of Sorrows.

On the side walls, there are baroque altarpieces dedicated to the Virgin of the Assumption and San Juan Nepomuceno. A small chapel dedicated to the Virgin of Guadalupe is located on the north wall.

Among the treasures housed in the cathedral is the pulpit, one of the three magnificent pulpits found in the city.
