Catedral de Guadalajara

The present Cathedral church began construction in 1561 under the orders of King Philip II of Spain.

It was in that year that Bishop Fray Pedro Ayala laid the foundation stone. However, it was officially declared completed, albeit without decoration and lacking the towers, on February 19, 1618.

The towers were not finished until the late 17th century. The original towers were not the ones we see today. They were square, shorter than the current ones, consisting of two levels, similar to those of San Francisco Church. However, they collapsed due to a strong earthquake in 1818. Utilizing the first level of the original towers, which remained intact, the current towers were built and completed in 1854, reaching a height of 65 meters. These towers have become an iconic symbol of the city.

The façade presents a blend of architectural styles with Gothic, Baroque, Moorish, and Neoclassical influences. It consists of three naves and spaces covered by vaults.

Inside, several paintings can be appreciated, including the notable work "The Immaculate Conception" by Bartolomé Esteban Murillo. Other notable elements include the organ, brought from France, which is the second-largest in Mexico, the Virgin of the Rose, a gift from Emperor Charles V, and an ivory Christ.

Beneath the choir and the main altar, there are crypts of bishops and cardinals, where the remains of those who have governed the diocese since the 16th century rest. This site also houses the skeletal remains of 23 men who defended religious freedom during the Cristero Wars and were beatified by Pope John Paul II in 1992.
