Basílica Catedral de la Madre Santísima de la Luz
The Basilica Cathedral of the Most Holy Mother of Light is considered one of the most emblematic cathedrals in Mexico.
It is a majestic building dating back to 1765. Its facade is in the Baroque style and it has two towers that reach a height of 67 meters.
The initial construction was started by the Jesuits in 1732. This new temple was dedicated to the Most Holy Mother of Light. However, the Jesuits were expelled in 1767 and the construction was suspended. It wasn't until 1830 that the construction resumed and it was finally completed in 1866.
The facade is adorned with quarry stone and has two levels. It features a statue of Pope John Paul II and has two towers with three levels each.
The interior has an elegant neoclassical style and it boasts a marble main altar with two columns that guard the image of the Virgin.
The cathedral also has beautiful chapels like the Chapel of Lord Saint Joseph, which has a Neo-Mudéjar style with exquisite decoration combining quarry stone, wood, and stucco.
