The old San José Temple was built by the Jesuits between 1588 and 1594.

In 1616, it suffered severe damage from an earthquake, so it was abandoned for many years. After some time, it was rebuilt, but in 1696, another earthquake struck, causing it to collapse completely.

From 1728 to 1744, the temple was rebuilt once again, and Bishop Ángel Maldonado proposed adding a convent to house the Capuchin congregation's nuns.

In 1893, the Ex Convent was acquired by Archbishop Gillow and became a home for the elderly and orphans. During the Revolution, it served as a hospital, and in 1947, it was restored to become the School of Fine Arts, which is now part of the Universidad Autónoma de Oaxaca.

The architectural layout of the temple is in the form of a Latin cross. The facade of the convent is Baroque in style, with a mixture of different popular vegetal motifs.

Inside, it presents simple yet elegant ornamentation.
