Templo y Ex Convento de San Juan Bautista de Tetela del Volcán
This cultural heritage site was inscribed on the World Heritage List in 1994.
The Ex Convent of San Juan Bautista began construction in the vicinity of the Popocatepetl volcano in 1563 by the Dominicans and was completed by the Augustinians in 1581.
The 16th-century building stands out for its robust buttresses, resembling a real fortress with a large atrium surrounded by massive retaining walls.
The corridors are adorned with extraordinary polychromatic murals, featuring phytomorphic crosses and magnificent woodwork that can be admired in the ceilings of the sacristy.
In the lower cloister, the twelve apostles are represented, as well as important Dominicans, while the perimeter walls depict "The Visitation" and "The Baptism". All the murals have marked Renaissance characteristics framed by Plateresque elements, creating a visually stunning effect.
During the time of the revolution, this building was used as a military barracks, suffering significant deterioration. Restoration work has been ongoing since 2004 to reverse the damage.
