Templo y Conservatorio de Música de Las Rosas
The Former Convent of Santa Catalina de Siena, now known as Temple and Conservatory of Music of Las Rosas, was built by the Dominicans in the 18th century in a Baroque style.
Its main characteristic is its monolithic columns, as they are made from a single stone. This convent has always been known for its intense musical activity.
Since 1743, when the Dominican order moved to a new convent, the College of Santa Rosa de Santa María was founded. Its purpose was to educate orphaned legitimate Spanish girls and women.
In the late 1940s, the Superior School of Sacred Music was established, which is still in operation today and serves as the home of the internationally renowned Morelia Children's Choir and the Morelia Chamber Orchestra.
Over time, the Conservatory of Las Rosas has become one of the high-level music education institutions with prestige throughout Latin America.
The temple has a double facade, with notable reliefs featuring figures of saints and emblems such as Santa Rosa de Lima, the Holy Family, Saint Fermi, Saint Francis Xavier, Saint Martin, and Saint Teresa of Jesus. Gargoyles can also be distinguished, evoking medieval architecture to some extent.
The temple continues to function, and inside, several gilded wooden altarpieces in the Churrigueresque style can be appreciated.
