Templo de Santa Veracruz
Considered one of the most beautiful Baroque structures in Mexico.Â
It is one of the oldest churches in the city, although the current construction was built in 1730. It is one of the oldest churches in the city, although the current construction was built in 1730.Â
In 1526, a hermitage was built and inaugurated by Hernán Cortés, who also founded a brotherhood called La Hermandad de Vera Cruz in remembrance of the first time he set foot on Mexican soil in 1519.Â
It became the third most important temple in the city, after the Sagrario and San Miguel.Â
Its facade features pilasters, two on the sides of the entrance and four in the second level. The choir window is oval.Â
The notable sculptor and architect Manuel Tolsá is buried in the atrium.
Facing the temple is Plaza Santa Veracruz, a beautiful space with a fountain, where the San Juan de Dios Temple, the Franz Mayer Museum, and the National Print Museum also converge.
