When the temple was built, it maintained the same patronage until it was dedicated to Saint Matthias the Apostle in 1700.
Before the current temple, there was an hermitage dedicated to Saint Catherine Martyr, which was built in 1669 in this traditional neighborhood located northeast of the city's Zocalo.
The building was reconstructed in 1713, and some other modifications were made in 1754, but it managed to survive the expropriations carried out during the Reform, and on March 13, 1941, the National Heritage Commission declared it a historic monument.
The main facade consists of two levels and contains a combination of geometric shapes and monograms.
The temple has a single nave with a continuous barrel vault. The main altarpiece is dedicated to Saint Matthias the Apostle. An impressive 19th-century organ stands out.
