Pinacoteca de la Profesa
The Temple of "San José el Real," better known as the Temple of San Felipe Neri "La Profesa."Â
It was built for the Society of Jesus around 1720 by the architect Pedro de Arrieta.Â
Next to it was the Casa Profesa, which served as the headquarters of the Jesuit provincial and accommodation for Jesuits. After the expulsion of the Jesuits in 1767, the church was handed over to the fathers of the Oratory of San Felipe Neri, with the name of San José el Real.
The temple has three wide naves closed by vaults supported by columns. The main altar was designed by Manuel Tolsá, and the decoration of the dome was entrusted to brilliant students from the Academy of San Carlos. However, its paintings were lost in a fire.
In 1861, after the enactment of the Reform Laws, the temple was closed for worship. A few months later, the Oratory House was demolished to allow the construction of Cinco de Mayo Avenue.
Currently, the temple remains open to the public, and inside, as well as in an adjacent pinacoteca, magnificent paintings by the great masters of Viceregal art can be appreciated.Â
It consists of over 450 paintings organized by themes and chronological order in four rooms.
There are valuable works by the most recognized artists of New Spain ranging from the 17th to the 20th century.
