Palacio de Gobierno (Government Palace)
This building is one of the many beautiful places in the city of Zacatecas.
It dates back to the 18th century and was one of the residences occupied by members of the viceregal nobility of Zacatecas, which is why it is also known as the Former House of the Counts of Laguna.
It was built with pink quarry, braz stone, and wrought iron. It is an example of colonial-era constructions with high ceilings, large wooden doors, a spacious courtyard, and splendid iron balconies framed by the historic Cerro de La Bufa.
Its facade, with sober beauty, has two levels. The first level has an arched and molded entrance, flanked by grilled windows. The second level features a central balcony with curved reliefs, and at the top, you can see the coat of arms finished in tile.
The interior has a central courtyard surrounded by decorated rooms and offices with original furniture and chandeliers from different eras. The main hall, with its roof structure and elegant chandeliers, stands out, giving it the image of a colonial aristocratic setting.
For nearly 200 years, from 1834, it served as the seat of the Local Congress. In 1867, it was temporarily declared the National Palace as it was here that Benito Juárez and his cabinet worked.
In 1985, it became the headquarters of the State Judiciary, and in 2014, it was transformed into the Government Palace Cultural Center.
Its majestic pink quarry staircase stands out, where a mural by the Zacatecan artist Antonio Pintor Rodríguez can be appreciated. The artwork represents different historical stages and characters of Zacatecas.
