Museo Regional de Tlaxcala, Ex Convento de San Francisco de Nuestra Señora de la Asunción

The Regional Museum of Tlaxcala is located in the former convent of San Francisco de Nuestra Señora de la Asunción, built between 1537 and 1540.

This astonishing building is situated southeast of Tlaxcala's main square and can be reached by walking through a beautiful tree-lined avenue with ash trees.

The Former Convent of San Francisco is a beautiful construction where the first pontifical mass of New Spain was held. Among the preserved furniture are the pulpit and a baptismal font.

The temple's roof, something unusual in Mexico, has two sloping sides and lacks domes; it consists of a single nave, and its only tower is separate from the church.

Inside, the ceiling boasts a Mudejar-style wooden coffered ceiling, considered the most important in Mexico. The main altar, in Baroque style, dates back to the 17th century and contains important paintings, sculptures, and carved wooden columns, including an oil painting depicting the baptism of a noble tlaxcalteca, with Hernán Cortés and Malinche as godparents.

The former convent house is now occupied by the Regional Museum since 1986, consisting of five rooms, four permanent and one temporary.

The museum addresses various topics such as paleontology in Tlaxcala, the pre-Hispanic era, the colonial period, the Mexican Revolution, and various themes from the 20th century.

In the courtyard, there is a display showcasing the geology of Tlaxcala, an interesting stone carving of the god Camaxtli, the tutelary deity of the ancient Tlaxcallan people, and samples of "eggshell" ceramics.

On the ground floor, various aspects of pre-Hispanic culture are displayed, with pieces from the archaeological sites of Xochitécatl, Cacaxtla, Tecoaque, Tizatlán, and Ocotelulco. Special highlights include a Chac Mool, an enigmatic polychrome urn from Cacaxtla, and the carving of the God Tonacatechuhtli or Teocacipactli, found in Tizatlán.

On the second floor, there are important collections of religious art, such as paintings, carved wooden sculptures, and more. Notable items include relics from the colonial period and the painting of the Virgin of Ocotlán.

The exhibition includes modern interactive displays.

Within the complex, it is also worth visiting the Chapel of the Preciosa Sangre with an ancient corn stalk Christ, the open hexagonal chapel, and the resting chapel.
