The impressive neoclassical architectural work began in 1797 and was completed in 1809.
Initially conceived as a warehouse, in 1810 it became the scene of the heroic feat by El Pípila.
It currently houses the Regional Museum of Guanajuato, featuring an archaeological, historical, and artistic collection. It has several rooms, including Mesoamerican Art, Chupícuaro ceramics, Hermenegildo Bustos, and those dedicated to the Colonial, Independence, Republic, and Revolution periods.
Master José Chávez Morado painted impressive murals on the building's stairway vaults. In addition to the permanent exhibition rooms, temporary exhibitions are also presented. The museum has a library and two archives: historical and photographic.
