The museum is housed in a construction with a simple and sober architecture.

The Convent of La Merced was the first convent founded in San Cristóbal by the Mercedarians.

During the Porfiriato, the church was remodeled in a neoclassical style, and the convent was turned into a prison, with the addition of the characteristic tower.

The sacristy preserved from the original construction a decorated Roman arch with floral motifs and relief plasterwork representing the sun and the moon, supported by a thick column in its beam.

Among its paintings, a two-headed eagle and the date 1759 can be appreciated.

Currently, the Amber Museum exhibits a collection that amounts to 350 pieces, some of them winners of important competitions. Additionally, this is a unique museum of its kind.

The Chiapas Amber Museum offers an Amber Exhibition Room that covers the origins, history, extraction, polishing, and carving of amber. The exhibition is complemented with texts, labels, videos, and photographs.

It has a cafeteria, an amber shop, photographs, books, artistic, cultural, and craft workshops.
