Museo de la Basílica de Guadalupe
This wonderful museum is located in the back part of the old temple of the Virgin of Guadalupe and was inaugurated on October 12, 1941.
The Basilica Museum houses more than 5,000 pieces related to sacred and religious art from the 16th to the 21st century. In fact, it has the largest collection nationwide of objects related to the Guadalupan or Marian theme.
It has 16 rooms, and its collection includes canvas paintings, polychrome sculptures, marble and ivory sculptures, engravings, books, textiles (standards, tapestries, gobelins, and liturgical vestments), goldsmithing, furniture of Mexican, Latin American, and European origin, as well as a large quantity of more than 2,000 ex-votos related to Guadalupe, mostly from the 19th and 20th centuries.
Some works by important Novohispanic artists are highlighted, such as Matías de Arteaga y Alfaro, Cristóbal de Villalpando, Nicolás Rodríguez Juárez, José de Ibarra, and Miguel Cabrera, among others.
Additionally, you can observe some military medals, engagement rings, and jewelry featuring depictions of received miracles.
It is important to mention that the building itself is a beautiful and historic structure. For example, the Abacial Hall was where the former abbots received distinguished guests, and the original furniture is still preserved there. Another example is the Archangel Hall, where paintings related to the archangels are displayed, or the Christological Hall with an exhibition related to Jesus.
