Museo de la Ciudad de Chetumal
The City Museum is located in the former Belisario Domínguez School.
It was inaugurated at the end of March 1998 and features six rooms with splendid museography.
The first room presents the background of Payo Obispo, the second room covers its foundation and early years, the third room showcases the city's wooden architecture with its English colonial influence, the fourth room is dedicated to Chetumal during the socialist and nationalist era, which was reinforced during World War II (1939-1945). The fifth room illustrates the city's path towards modernity, starting from 1959, after the passage of Hurricane Janet, and the early years of President Adolfo López Mateos' government. The sixth room portrays the daily life of Chetumal, including games, traditions, and entertainment.
The museum exhibits photographic material dating back to the early 20th century, as well as other attractive pieces such as a scaled model of the Chetumal pontoon, which served as a customs vessel during the city's commercial boom.
The museum also features a corner dedicated to women, displaying ancient items such as dressing tables, sewing machines, irons, and chairs that are part of the cultural heritage of families with a strong tradition in the state capital. It also showcases weapons used in the Caste War, antiques such as vases, kerosene lamps, coins, necklaces, radios, televisions, gramophones, and a secretary desk that belonged to Admiral Othón Pompeyo Blanco.
