The Hospicio Cabañas
Cabañas Hospice, a cultural heritage site inscribed in 1997 on the UNESCO World Heritage List.
The Cabañas Cultural Institute has become an emblem of the city of Guadalajara. It is a work of the renowned architect Manuel Tolsá, who responded to a request from Bishop Juan Cruz Ruiz de Cabañas y Crespo.
The beautiful building was completed in 1845 in a magnificent neoclassical style. Its architecture is characterized by the simplicity and harmony of its design, particularly the portico formed by six Tuscan-style columns.
In 1938 and 1939, the Mexican muralist José Clemente Orozco transformed the interior walls of the chapel into an impressive artistic work, featuring the protagonists of the Conquest of Mexico. The frescoes of the "Franciscan Friar," "Conquistador Knights" Felipe II and "The Cross" adorn the vault of the right wing, while the wall depicts "Juan Ruiz De Cabañas," the founder of this institution. On the opposite side and on the vault, attention is drawn to "Cortés and Victory" and "Scenes of War," with the mural known as "The Man of Fire" standing out.
Currently, the monumental building has 23 courtyards, 126 rooms, 72 corridors, and two chapels, covering a total area of 23,447.90 square meters. It hosts various exhibitions of painting, sculpture, photography, cinematography, etc. Additionally, it has areas dedicated to the teaching of music, dance, and theater.
On the exterior esplanade, two beautiful and enigmatic bronze sculptural ensembles can be found.
