In its early days, it was the main seat of the Franciscans, the starting point of the first evangelizing missions in the 16th century on the Peninsula.

Exactly at the site where the church stands, the first mass on Maya land was celebrated in 1517. 

It was the first Franciscan construction founded on the Peninsula in the year 1546.
